Public Address Systems: Planning Speaker Coverage for Large Buildings

It is tempting to assume evenly spaced speakers will provide even coverage, but ceiling height, room acoustics, background noise levels and building materials all affect how far sound actually travels clearly. A warehouse with high ceilings and machinery noise needs a very different approach from a quiet office corridor, even at the same physical spacing.

Most PA installations are divided into zones, so announcements can be sent to a specific area, a single floor, a warehouse section, or a building wide emergency broadcast, rather than every speaker in the building always playing the same audio. This is particularly important for larger sites where a targeted announcement is more useful than a building wide one for routine use.

For commercial and residential buildings, PA systems often integrate with the fire alarm system so evacuation instructions can be broadcast automatically and clearly across every zone during an emergency, similar in principle to how access control integrates with fire exits for safe egress. This integration is worth planning from the start rather than adding after the base system is installed.

Not every site needs background music. Some businesses want announcement and emergency capability only, which simplifies the system and its zoning. Others, particularly retail and hospitality sites, want background music as a standard feature alongside announcements, which is worth specifying clearly before design begins.
